What are the effects of not having clean water?

We have heard countless stories of Nicaraguans that live most of their lives with an upset stomach. The parasites and fertilizers that contaminate water sources in many of the communities we serve cause health problems that prevent adults from being able to work consistently and can keep students from attending school. In addition to the contamination provided by unclean water sources, not having access to a permanent source of water leaves many families worried about where they will access water to cook and drink. This can cause families to spend excess amounts of time walking to gather water which prevents some kids from attending school and some adults from working.

How are the wells maintained?

Each well has a board made up of 7 elected community members who are responsible for regulating proper well usage, maintenance, and ensuring every member of the community is participating in the capacity that they can to pay a small monthly fee. This fee goes to help cover electricity and possible upkeep costs.

How many people does one well serve in a community?

Each community and well varies in number of households and members. We gather a census before installing every well to get an understanding of the community that we will be serving and to plan supply costs. Communities have varied between serving 300 and 1800 people. On average, we estimate approximately 800 people per well.
